The weather is finally right for a trip up to the upper peninsula – enough foliage on the trees, not too late in the season for the falls to go a bit dry… its time for drive.

After a bit of a late start (low tire pressure, looking for some clips for a hip belt and such) I headed out to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. There are lots of waterfalls up here – more than many people realize.

Driving through Northern Wisconsin is beautiful and a nice drive in general.  Small towns where there are a few houses, maybe a church, a tavern and a general store.

One of the things that I drove past that was a bit surprising was a paved bike trail on Highway 70 near St. Germain. My parents have often lamented that there are very few significant lengths of paved trail in Wisconsin – you see only a few miles at the start of a trial for the family trips, but nothing long.  This route was 27 miles long.  Turns out its the county rather than the state.

Jumped out of the car to take a look at Bond Falls as I passed by it – certainly heading back there tomorrow… with some mosquito repellant.

Finally got to the town of Baraga for where I’m staying.  Its in eastern timezone, though only 3 minutes earlier in solar time than Eau Claire… so my clock is a bit off from the local time.

One surprise there – there are some icebergs on the bay.
